Saori Sewing & Clothing

Saori handwoven cloth is often used to make clothing and household items. The actual sewing of these garments typically consists of straight seams sewn on a machine. There are not a lot of fancy stitches or complicated techniques. Often the selvedges are sewn to the outside and fringes are used in creative ways.

There are several Saori pattern books available with clothing items for both men and women. The beginner Saori clothing patterns typically use the whole piece of cloth with very little cutting.

The styles are easy-wear and have a bit of a bohemian flair.

The Saori pattern books are typically sized to fit the “average Japanese woman” who is, apparently, 5’2” tall and weighs 120 lbs. Before you decide that these patterns are not for you, please consider that none of the patterns are for form-fitted or tailored garments, and all the patterns will fit a wide variety of sizes and body types.

The Saori pattern books are also meant to be an inspiration and offer suggestions to help you create your own clothing, so don’t be afraid to alter the patterns to suit your personal style.

The same Saori garment on three different body types

We recently did a Saori clothing photo shoot with three people with different body types. In the photo above, as well as the gallery of images below, you can see examples of the same garment (not a similar but differently sized garment, but the exact same garment) on those three different body types.

Yes, the clothing fits each person differently, but the point is, it fits each person and can be styled appropriately for their body. This is one of the reasons that Saori clothing makes great gifts, since you don’t need to know a precise clothing size for the recipient!

A lot of Saori clothing is made using a draping process rather than a pattern and with the idea of letting the cloth become what it wants.

For example, a piece of cloth woven “without intent” is finished and washed. Certain areas of the cloth may shrink more than other areas. By using the draping method of clothing design, you can put those areas to the best advantage in your finished garment.

A felted area of cloth may fall in the right place to add structure to the finished garment like at the top of a shoulder where a seam should typically exist, or as a pocket with some body to it sewn onto the outside of the garment.

An area that has shrunk in considerably on both sides may end up as a front or side panel, with the shrunken area falling at the waist. In this way you can give shaping to what would typically be a boxy piece of clothing, using the natural contours of the fabric.

Draping a Saori Garment

The most important aspect of Saori clothing is to remember that it is wearable art. We are not making your standard blouse and skirt that can be seen in every department store. We are making unique garments that allow people to express their appreciation of color, texture, and creativity.
